JUST SOME LITTLE TIDBITS....
that i found interesting:
A letter to Miramax's Weinstein by Chris Hyde
Skimming through this article, i think its a nice moderate, subtle criticism of the mishandling of Asian cinema on the part of Weinstein. I am a bit open to a certain sort of bias, if u read my past posts, but i think this sort of thing packs a little something to my argument. The ongoing debacle that is profit margin to art in the movies will never cease, i guess, and this sort of reality is sad, but there are always a way to remedy this. With Miramax, the #1 priority is that profit margin, of course. And when Chris mentions that Weinstein intended to release Asian cinema in the states a decade b4 CTHD... it jus makes me wonder. Seems as if he jus wanted to get on the bandwagon when the market was hot, ehh? In any case, my main point is amplified by what Chris is saying. By doing all that he is doing, Weinstein is doing himself and the fans a great injustice. Hes jus taking the wrong approach, and until he realizes this (or when some1 else does...), Miramax will be the bane of society... at least when it comes to distribution of Asian cinema in the US. A little something that i found interesting, thats all.
I also think hes onto something with this one as well...
Yea, i like Korean cinema as well. Action flicks have improved quite a bit from all those ones of old. And then there are those shining jewels that are worth mention. My Sassy Girl is an obvious one, mentioned in the article. There are others ones to that caught my eye, and others that ive been meaning to see. He didnt mention a couple of movies that i liked. One is JSA (Joint Security Area), which i enjoyed a lot. Its a purely fictional account of a group of North and South Korean soldiers guarding the DMZ who establish a sort of friendship during the night. A misunderstanding occurs one night and a North Korean soldier is shot dead, and the whole movie revolves around this incident. North and South... one people divided under arbitrary circumstances, circumstances which seem irreversible. Again, its a sad state of affairs, but an interesting movie. And then there's Friend... which i didnt quite get to finish yet. Pretty much the story of 4 friends traced from childhood into the adult years, set in my parents' hometown. (they also use the sattori accent, heheh). I have yet to c a good number of the movies hes mentioned, but yea, i think he knows what hes talkin about.
Ehh, jus some things i happened to come across while lookin for the Hero DVD online (a special extended? version is expected to come out the 28th of this month). Well, take care yall. More to come soon.
